Glacier Bay Public Hearing Draws Crowd

A public hearing on the proposed Glacier Bay waterpark was held by the Elmwood Township Planning Commission on Oct. 18, with a standing room-only crowd. After a long (some thought too long) presentation by the developers and their engineers, the public was able to have its say.

Only one speaker, for Elmwood Township supervisor Stan Kouchnakovitch, spoke in favor of the development. The rest of the dozens of citizens who spoke criticized the project. Chief concerns: water and traffic. Citizens wondered whether the thousands of gallons used every day by the waterpark would affect local wells, and whether its water discharge would affect the aquifer or the Bay. The volume of traffic that the project will generate was also a concern. What will happen at the entrance to the waterpark, projected to be located on a hilly, curving stretch of M-72 west of Traverse City? How about the already overcrowded intersection of M-72 and M-22? And what about the overflow into secondary streets and roads in Elmwood when drivers seek to avoid congestion caused by the waterpark?
