Hunters oppose DNR plan to thin deer herd

deer.jpg Deer hunters reacted angrily Thursday to a DNR proposal to cut populations of white-tail deer in half. According to this story in the Bay City Times, hunters and business people from northern Michigan travelled to Roscommon to speak out against the DNR proposal, which is intended to reduce the risk of bovine tuberculosis in the deer herd. The critics claim that the DNR's policy has already so greatly reduced the deer population that the tradition of hunting and the local businesses that serve hunters have been put at risk, and that the new plan may destroy them altogether.
