Citizens charge heavy-handed tactics in recall drive
Some Elmwood township citizens have been subjected to threats and other heavy-handed topics by circulators of a recall petition against Supervisor Deri Smith, according to reports to The Post. Speaking anonymously out of a fear of retaliation, residents have complained of circulators who camped out in their living rooms or driveways, refusing to leave even when asked to or when told that the residents support Smith.
These stories are a matter for concern if true. In our opinion, the right of recall is part of our democratic system. The process can be rough, even personal. But there is no place, here or elsewhere in our public life, for threats and attempted intimidation.

I don't believe in posting or printing anonymous comments unless you have independent verification. I hope you do have them and I hope if you cover the Northport sewer in any way you will be careful in this respect. It just doesn't seem likely that a person trying to get a signature on a petition would "camp out," etc., because it's obvious you wouldn't get a signature that way.

We agree with you that everything else being equal it's preferable to publish only those allegations that people are willing to stand behind. The problem is that when people have been bullied they are often afraid of going public for fear of retaliation. In this case, we've heard about this behavior from more than one citizen. We know and respect the individuals who made the claims. And we think it's important that this kind of behavior not go unreported. But we do understand and respect your view.

False reporting seems to go along with the editor and publisher of this site. It is not the first time and probably won't be the last that lies are used to further your cause. Mr. Van Zoeren said that he would not report here anything that could not be verified with facts. Do you have an affidavit as to the allegations? Then it is not fact. Shame on you.
