A military explosives unit from the Selfridge base had to be called in to detonate a device--apparently a large military flare--that was discovered on the shore of West Bay Wednesday. The flare, which was found just north of East Walters Drive, was thought to have fallen from "an unknown military aircraft," (!) according to a Leelanau Sheriff's department press release.
