Best Michigan books

books.jpg Here's a list of 10 best Michigan books, including not a few that have to do with Leelanau County and our region.

Take a look at this list on Lansing City Pulse --you're bound to find something you've overlooked. My personal favorites would be the Nick Adams stories and Bruce Catton's Waiting for the Morning Train.

A fascinating perspective on Building 50

Bldg50.jpg Building 50 on the old State Hospital grounds in Traverse City is an outstanding example of the theories of Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride. Kirkbride advocated a treatment for the mentally ill known as Moral Treatment, an essential element of which was the creation of structures like Building 50 -- carefully planned, massive buildings located on spacious and beautiful grounds.

This site provides an introduction to Kirkbride's life and work and features the Traverse City State Hospital, among other institutions. It's also an extraordinarily well done and inviting website.

The Leelanau Post is featured {Updated]

post.jpg Forgive us, please while we blow our own horn. The Leelanau Post is featured in the Our Town section of the Record-Eagle today. (Not available in the online version, unfortunately -- what's up with that?) So hurry on down to your local newstand if you want to see a photo of our fearless publisher and her loyal editor, and to read a very nice article.

Update: The webmaster from the Record-Eagle considerately contacted me to say that because the article was written by a freelancer, the RE does not have the rights to post it on the online edition. (See the comment below.) So that's why it's not online.

Lynne Rae Perkins interview

criss_cross_s.jpg Suttons Bay author Lynne Rae Perkins recently won the prestigious Newberry Award for her novel, Criss Cross. In this interview, she advises aspiring authors to read, read, read.

"I learned everything I know about writing from reading," says Lynne in this Freep interview, where she talks about reading all the Landmark books in her school library, her hopes for some good reviews (she got 'em), and her plans for the future. Worth a read.

A symphonic house in Northport

musicalhouse.jpgWonderful article in the Record-Eagle today about a "symphonic house" in Northport designed by our friend, David Hanawalt.

David, who has a history of designing houses that have a story (including a magician's house with hidden rooms and other "tricks"), has designed a wonderful house for Anna and Jonathan Wege in Northport. Not only is the house open to and designed around the natural sounds of the environment (wind, waves, trees), it can actually be played by rubbing musical strings that form part of the structure (you can hear the house here.

What an amazing place we live in, populated as it is by such creative and innovative people!

Photographer captures still beauty of our area

camera.jpg Michael L. Dailey is a Indiana-based photographer who often works in northern Michigan. His photography is restrained, simple, often muted, capturing the stillness and silence of the natural world and of old and deserted structures returning to the natural world.

His website has a gallery of his photos arranged into Botanicals, Landscapes, and Structures; as well as an artist bio and other info. It's worth a visit.

Suttons Bay author wins prestigious prize

criss_cross.jpg Suttons Bay author Lynne Rae Perkins has won the prestigious Newbery Medal for children's literature for her novel Criss Cross, says the Freep.

The novel consists of a series of poems, vignettes and illustrations about a group of small-town teenagers. The award committee chair, Barbara Barstow, said of the book "Writing in a wry, omniscient third-person narrative voice, Perkins deftly captures the tentativeness and incompleteness of adolescence," .

That's an honor for Perkins--and for Leelanau County. Congratulations!
